Raleigh honors 14 sites with appearance
awards
RALEIGH -- A downtown developer, a renovated strip shopping center
and new homes for both poor and wealthy were among this year's winners
of the city's Sir Walter Raleigh Awards for Community Appearance.
The city gave out 14 awards, chosen from a field of nearly 40 nominations.
An independent jury chose the winners.
The winners, by category:
Residential or neighborhood: Capitol Park, the redevelopment of
the former Halifax Court public housing complex; The Gardens on
Glenwood, upscale condominiums; Hargett-Swain and Martin Park redevelopment
projects east of downtown.
Commercial: Falls Village Shopping Center renovation; Glenwood Village
Dentistry, 2609 Glenwood Ave.
Historic preservation/rehabilitation: Home restoration at 425 N.
Bloodworth St.; Goodwin House restoration at 220 Hillsborough St.;
Rogers-Bagley-Daniels-Pegues House and Frazier House restorations
on E. South Street.
Community: Edenton Street United Methodist Church fellowship hall
addition.
Institutional: Moore Square Museums Magnet Middle School.
Industrial: David Allen Co. corporate headquarters, 150 Rush St.
Tree and landscape conservation: Capitol Broadcasting Company, 2619
Western Blvd.
Site enhancement: WakeMed North stormwater facilities, 10000 Falls
of the Neuse Road.
Individual: Developer Greg Hatem of Empire Properties.
